INTERNACIONAL.- El Gobierno británico adelantará a 2035 la prohibición de vender automóviles nuevos de diésel, gasolina o híbridos, que había fijado para cinco años más tarde, con la intención de reducir a cero las emisiones contaminantes.
La decisión, anunciada este martes (04.02.2020) por el primer ministro británico, Boris Johnson, se produce después de que los expertos alertaran de que el plazo fijado en 2040 retrasaba demasiado el objetivo de reducir a cero las emisiones de C02 para 2050, como se ha propuesto el Reino Unido.
Durante un acto en Londres para lanzar la cumbre climática COP26 que se celebrará en noviembre en Glasgow (Escocia), en el que también participó el naturalista David Attenborough, Johnson afirmó que 2020 será “un año decisivo de acción climática” para el planeta.
“La celebración de la COP26 es una importante oportunidad para que el Reino Unido y las naciones de todo el mundo den un paso adelante en la lucha contra el cambio climático”, dijo Johnson. “Al tiempo que estableceremos a lo largo de este año nuestros planes para alcanzar nuestro ambicioso objetivo de neutralidad carbono para 2050, instaremos a otros a que se unan a nosotros”, agregó.
“El Gobierno ha actuado correctamente”
El reconocido naturalista David Attenborough dijo que espera con ganas la celebración de la COP26 y consideró “alentador” que el Gobierno lance este año de “acción climática”.
“Cuanto más lo dejemos … peor se va a poner. Así que ahora es el momento. Depende de nosotros organizar a las naciones del mundo para hacer algo al respecto”, apuntó.
El representante del colectivo ecologista “Friends of the Earth”, Mike Childs, afirmó que el Gobierno ha actuado correctamente al adelantar el plazo de la prohibición, pero matizó que sería más conveniente situarlo incluso cinco años antes, en 2030.
“Un nuevo objetivo para 2035 todavía dejará al Reino Unido en el camino lento de la revolución de los coches eléctricos y, mientras tanto, permitirá que más gases de efecto invernadero salgan a la atmósfera”, declaró.
